3: Preparing the receptor sites
We make our receptor sites with a variety of
instruments. We use hollow core needles and a modified, microtomed blade that make slits that measure 0.9,1,
2 and 3 mm. Very, very rarely we use punches that make small holes measuring
1.3, 1.5 or, rarely, 2.0 mm. (25.4mm equal 1 inch.) As noted earlier,
we feel that a feature that distinguishes La Jolla Hair Restoration
is that we do not try to make all heads fit one technical solution.
Although we often use the approach that is
called Follicular Unit Transplantation, we feel that
you should understand our thinking that both density and economy are
better served by considering alternatives to follicular grafts that
average only 1.8 to 2.2 hairs. Dr. Reed feels that the major limiting factor
in density is encountered when trying to place grafts in subsequent
sessions closely to grafts of previous sessions without injuring them
with the scalpel. If this is the major limiting factor for density,
then doesn't it make sense that more density results when it is a 3
to 5 hair graft (depending upon your hair characteristics) that the
surgeon is trying to get close to rather than a 2 hair graft? Of course
a pluggy look is unacceptable and is what determines what graft sizes
are options. Your hair characteristics and the location of the graft
will determine this.
